Qualifications

When I work with people I use a combination of Performance Coaching, Life Coaching, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Hypnotherapy and Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT). Also, as required: common sense, reason and logic, and a sense of humour!

Working backwards, I most recently qualified as an RTT Therapist and Certified Hypnotherapist with Marisa Peer in 2021. Previously I qualified as a Certified Hypnotherapist with the IIHNLP&H in 2007, as an NLP Trainer in 2003, Master Practitioner in 2001, and Practitioner in 1998.

I qualified with a PGCE (Primary) in 1991, an MSc in Philosophy (Edinburgh) in 1988, Diploma in Theology (Oxon) 1987 and BA in English Literature and Language (Oxon) 1984 (upgraded to an MA in 1989).

My values

Over 20 years ago, when training as an NLP practitioner I did a simple exercise to identify my values. To help me remember the results, I made my values into an acrostic: I decided I have A BUnCH of great values. Standing for

Authenticity

Being fully alive

Unconditional love

Creativity

Harmony

I realised that being authentic really mattered to me – or in other words, I valued truth, and being true to myself, whatever the outward pressures to conform. I also valued feeling alive (having a sense of wonder and freshness every day), saw Love as the greatest value (even if loving enemies is hard), felt most alive and myself when being creative and preferred harmony to conflict (though as authenticity came first I would if need be choose that over harmony).

When I revisit them now I am aware how they haven’t changed, even while the outer circumstances of my life have changed considerably.

I share this not because my values are the ‘right’ ones or to recommend them, but as an example of why authenticity so matters to me and why I so love helping others live their authentic lives.

Professional Me

I have not followed a conventional career path, but have always done work that I have loved, involved a lot of learning and needed me to grow as a person. I have

  • Taught for a year in a secondary school in rural Kenya
  • Spent 3 very intensive years working 80 hour weeks with ‘emotionally disturbed’ children at the Cotswold Community
  • Taught more conventionally in a primary school in Somerset
  • Been the headteacher of a rural primary school in Somerset, known for its innovative approach to teaching
  • Facilitated thousands of teachers and Headteachers on leadership programmes in London and South West England
  • Worked as a Coach to Headteachers and been the lead facilitator on the National Local Leaders of Education programme, teaching coaching skills to some of England’s most successful Headteachers
  • Created an Advanced Coaching Skills programme for teachers, now offered to therapists who seek coaching skills alongside their therapeutic skills
  • I have also founded and am Director of 20Q Ltd., a tech company offering online Leadership 360°s in the UK and internationally

For me, qualifying as an RTT therapist adds a brilliant new dimension to my previous work as a Coach, NLP practitioner and hypnotherapist. I can help people change quicker and more powerfully than ever before.

Like any professional I take care to invest in the best possible tools for the tasks in hand.

Personal Me

While working intensely at the Cotswold Community in the 1980s I worked alongside and fell in love with Sue, and we’ve been married since 1989. We’re blessed with three wonderful children. In 2008 I spent 14 months designing and project managing the conversion of a run down barn into our current home.

Sue works therapeutically to support families with adopted children and we both enjoy offering hospitality to  family, friends and people on therapeutic retreats. We both enjoy creating a beautiful garden and travel with a touch of adventure. I like to feel rooted and relax by walking the dog or chainsawing or splitting logs!

I’ve travelled to the DRC and am treasurer of www.semiliki-trust.org.uk a charity supporting health and education in the DRC, one of the most challenging places in the world.

Part of living your authentic life is being able to think for yourself. I believe this has got harder with a widespread lack of understanding that we think in three different ways. To find out more go to www.thinkingforeveryone.com

I am very happy with my life, but along the way I’ve experienced anxiety, imposter syndrome, limiting beliefs around money, health and relationships: I’ve been significantly overweight, suffered emotional pain from being sent to boarding school at the age of eight, worried about debt, and lacked confidence.

I can’t claim to have experienced every problem in the world but I have experience of a good range of them, and if you had a situation that I felt I genuinely could not help I can probably recommend someone who is able to help. Do get in touch!

Testimonials

Pain Relief and Positivity

I immediately began to feel more positive, forward looking & almost excited at how I felt. I now sleep well, & on the whole, life has become more rounded. My attitude to life & its problems is more positive too.
A number of my friends have commented on how well I look despite having recently had an operation for bowel cancer.
I found the experience amazingly positive, uplifting & life changing. I did not realise how much my early years influenced my adult life. The tape I was given is played every evening which keeps me grounded.

Binge eating

"I felt immediately that I was I safe hands  from the session’s start.Throughout the intake Peter was listening very carefully and asking good questions until my intention and wishes for the session were very clear.

My biggest issue was binging on food – eating too much, being an ’emotional eater’.

Peter managed in hypnosis to take me back to situations and scenes from my childhood and youth that I was able to link directly to my emotional eating of today.

That was just splendid! Suddently I understood why and what caused me to eat emotionally and now after the therapy, I feel like I have divided the problem into two issues – an issue with my emotions and an issue with my eating, and now for me to handle separately, and that is the true gift of  RTT-therapy to facilitate a fundamental understanding that is the basis of a changing a behaviour you want to change for the better, and this needs  a skilled RTT-therapist, and I will definitely recommend Peter.

(update after 4 months): I’m not binging at all anymore! I actually find it quite unnatural to binge now with no “substitute effect” and therefore no emotional reason for doing it. I eat healthy food because I want to but have no trouble to stop naturally.  I feel really good about that and I do exercises every morning! "

Skilled and Compassionate

Peter is one of the most highly skilled, talented and compassionate professionals  that I’ve had the pleasure of working with. He uses the core principles of NLP, RTT and coaching in a pragmatic, intuitive and thoughtful manner with all of his clients. He applies his unique approaches creatively, in order to effectively meet each individual’s needs and desired outcomes. Peter is also kind, genuine and able to help those he works with quickly feel at ease.  I would not hesitate to recommend Peter to my clients.

Anxiety

I have felt more positive about the future and my time at university, I came in slightly terrified to return and now I am ready to go, see what happens, without pressure of success or failure. I know I can do this to my ability and then after have the FREEDOM to try new and amazing things with my life.

I would definitely recommend this as a treatment as it is interesting to unlock parts of your unconscious you may have not dealt with and I recommend Peter because he is kind, and takes the time to understand what you want to achieve and why you’re there. It is a very safe environment and I felt I could say what I really wanted and not worry about being judged or questioned.

Phobia and Unsettled Dreams

When I acknowledged I had developed a phobia of driving over bridges, I realised I needed to embrace some remedial therapy. Whilst a fear of falling may be common, ‘driving off a bridge’, or ‘freezing in the middle lane of a motorway bridge’  seriously impact one’s available travel options. When I learnt of Peter’s Hypnotherapy approach, with a single intense session, I felt it was worth engaging with the process, to overcome this phobia.
Under hypnosis, an infant trauma of a near drowning experience in the sea, was identified, and explored, with two reinforcing traumas of a similar intensity and nature (involving water). Peter then gave me a fresh coherent ‘narration’ to these traumas, which I am now attempting to embrace, as I travel to visit friends.
In preparation for our session I was asked to complete a form to identify issues that I recognised in myself, and we agreed to focus on the phobia mentioned above, however, one of the other issues I had mentioned was my ‘Stressful Dreaming”. In the week since my session with Peter, I have experienced what I would describe as ‘Peaceful Dreaming’, and attribute this to the session I had with Peter, and the therapy he offered extending beyond the initially identified symptom, for which I am genuinely grateful.
Thanks Peter.

Extraordinary and life changing

Initially I was really skeptical about hypnosis because my only experience of it was going to these weird shows where people were apparently being knocked out and made to do stupid things and I wasn’t going to do that!

Also, I wasn’t sure if I could be hypnotised, I’m a do-er, not a be-er, what I was really surprised by - absolutely stunned by … was that I was able to go into a state of calm (I wasn’t asleep or knocked out) and I was able to process things as Peter guided me without all of the extra noise...

I was in this place of calm…I decided I was just going to trust the session ..I really wanted to sort some things that I hadn’t been able to sort before

Some memories came up that were quite troubling - things I might have known but were deeply buried - but I was still feeling very calm, I just decided to trust it, Peter was talking me through what to do… looking back it was extraordinary, and actually life changing, and among other things I now have a completely different relationship to some one very significant yet with whom I’d had a really difficult relationship..

The next time I spent time with this person… I realised that something had changed in me, I was less susceptible to feeling hurt.. We had a really good time together… something had really shifted…I was extremely surprised as I had been trying to change things as long as I can remember!
